First off, I’ve got to hand it to the writers of Lost. They’ve really brought back the elements of fascination and mystery that got so many people hooked during the first season. Of all the season ending shows over the past few weeks (and we watched way too many of them), I’d give the top prize to Lost. Not only from the perspective of the show’s plot, which left us hanging with just the right amount of old questions answered and new questions raised; but also gave some new twists that felt less contrived than much of this past season had. I think the show seemed to lose some steam during it’s hiatus, and a lot of the time Jack, Kate and Sawyer were with the Others felt slow moving and a little out of sorts. Pulling up the final episode with a ‘flash-forward’ was a nice touch (even though Jack mentioning his Father felt a little forced).
In comparison to other finales this season, Lost managed to do what other established shows seemed to fall short on (namely 24). It became fresh again. 24 still had a strong season but suffered from a lot of “been there done that” and became somewhat predictable near the end. Then for Mr. Bauer to just drop off the ‘copter and wander off made it seem like, “oh well…”. No big hook leading into next season. Jericho had a strong ending, only to get the axe. The Office had an uplifting ending, but failed to rival the end of last season in emotion. And Scrubs bummed me out because the whole episode was fantastic and the season was really cranking into gear, only to be ruined by the last scene with Elliot and JD (I’m not a fan of the plot having them get back together or them screwing up the direction their lives are taking)…
I almost forgot Heroes !. Now that show ended strong. And although there are some questions unanswered, it seems to be setting up more for a long run of new and different storylines as opposed to focusing on the initial string of characters it began with. I know there are plans for a short miniseries tied to the main show as well. It has the potential for a long run (in my opinion…)
At least the summer season is upon us, and I can’t wait for Rescue Me, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and the whole lot of FX’s excellent summer fare to kick into action.
